A meniscal repair is a surgical procedure to repair a torn meniscus via keyhole surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure often undergone as an outpatient. Factors affecting success include tear age, location and pattern, age of the patient, as well as any associated injuries.
Meniscal lesions are the most common intra-articular knee injury and are the most frequent cause of surgical procedures performed by orthopaedic surgeons. A recent study shows there are more male patients (59.5%) undergoing an isolated meniscal repair compared with female patients (40.5%).
In general, meniscal tears frequently occur in middle-aged and elderly patients and are caused by degeneration. One third of the lesions by young patients are caused by sports-related injuries, because of the cutting or twisting movements, hyperextension or actions with great force. In more than 80%, meniscus tears are accompanied by anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
We recently attended to a 41 year male for a post meniscal repair rehabilitation who tried different exercises but couldn’t get the full range of motion. Experienced difficulty in climbing up and down the stairs, and prolonged standing was painful. These conditions are often ignored thinking it will heal over time; however it needs to be given rehab priority to achieve the desired motion, strength and regular activities.
At GoodSheppard we specialise in treating such injuries, In this case we created an individualised treatment plan that first focused on increasing the range of motion, strengthening and proprioception. We saw significant improvement in less than 2 weeks and he has now progressed to agility training. It is no miracle but a systematic approach and expertise in treating such cases and the patient’s body responses helped us achieve results in such a short span of time.
So we urge you to not be ignorant about Post Meniscal Repair thus waiting for time to achieve full range of motion and agility. Instead seek advice and adhere to appropriate therapy to achieve your goals.
